The robotic dogs, called ‘Sanjay’ stole the show as they made their debut in West Bengal’s Republic Day celebrations, leaving the dignitaries and the crowd in awe.
‘Sanjay’ is an all-weather robotic dog designed to perform a range of operations. The robot can be deployed in scenarios requiring explosives detection and disposal, surveillance, perimeter security, and asset protection, the Indian Army said. It is also equipped to handle operations in chemical, biological, and nuclear warfare environments.
The parade on Kolkata’s Red Road saw participation from contingents of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, Rapid Action Force, and Disaster Management Group.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose unfurled the National Flag and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also participated in the celebrations.
The robotic dogs were among the main attractions of the parade, which also included a display of advanced artillery like ‘Pinaka’ and ‘Smerch’ missile systems, as well as new-generation military vehicles.
Cultural performances, such as the ‘Kukri’ dance by artists from Darjeeling, and participation by students from the Sundarbans and Baul performers, added a vibrant touch to the ceremony.
Innovative Technology: Key Features of ‘Sanjay’
‘Sanjay,’ a four-legged robot, is designed to handle a variety of operations, making it a versatile asset for the Indian Army. The robot is engineered to perform tasks in challenging terrains, such as climbing stairs, navigating steep hills, and crossing obstacles. Its all-weather adaptability is one of the key features, allowing it to function in extreme conditions, ranging from temperatures as low as -40°C to as high as 55°C.
The ‘MULE’ is built to enhance military operations in numerous ways. It plays a crucial role in perimeter security, asset protection, and even in the most complex situations involving chemical, biological, or nuclear warfare. Its capabilities extend to explosives detection, disposal, intelligence gathering, and surveillance. This multi-functionality makes it an invaluable tool for the armed forces.
The robotic dogs can carry up to 15 kilograms of payload, providing a versatile and reliable means of transporting equipment in difficult environments. Currently, the Indian Army has inducted around 100 robotic dogs into various units, with ‘Sanjay’ being one of the standout models.
